First yoga class

What to expect at your first yoga class

The hardest part of yoga is the first class, and most of that is just not knowing what happens. So here is the whole thing, start to finish, so you can walk in knowing what to expect.

What to wear

Comfortable clothes you can move and stretch in. Leggings or shorts and a top that will not fall over your head when you bend forward. You practice barefoot, so no special shoes. That is it.

What to bring

Bring a water bottle and, if you have one, a yoga mat. If you do not have a mat, we have everything you need at the studio. That is genuinely all you need for your first class.

When to arrive

Come about ten minutes early. It gives you time to sign in, set up your mat, meet the teacher, and settle in before class starts. Tell us it is your first time when you arrive so we can look after you.

What happens in class

Most classes start with a few quiet minutes to settle and breathe. The teacher guides you through poses, usually building from gentle to more active and back down to a calm finish. You end lying down for a few minutes of rest. The teacher offers easier and harder options the whole way through, so you choose what is right for your body that day.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own mat?

No. We have mats and props at the studio. Bring your own if you prefer one.

What if I can't do a pose?

That is completely normal and expected. Every pose has an easier version, and you can rest anytime. Yoga is a practice, not a performance.

Will I be the only beginner?

No. We have new students in classes all the time, and our studio practices next to every age and every level. Nobody is watching you, and everybody was new once.
